It may be vain, it may be pride but, for me it is generational! Not only does my mom obsess over her hair but, my 87 year old gorgeous Grandmother drives(has someone drive her) 2 and 1/2 hours to have her shining gray hair cut. So as you can see HAIR is an issue! Hair is my confidence! I frequently say that the blonder I become the bigger my self esteem! I never went blonde until I graduated college, I never understood how those college students could afford the "good" salons. I guess I have to mention the time in 9th grade when I spent my summer spraying the natural blonde lemon highlight spray that turned my hair orange This put me in a chair with a snobby legit hair stylest dying my hair black and making me feel like the biggest idiot for using Wal-Mart as as beauty consultant. For the last 5 or so years I have been a "true" blonde not all true blondes have blonde roots! I have hunted high and low for the best designer to be so lucky as to highlight my hair! I found the place in this town and I have been very loyal to her and the calming salon she works at. I tip well, compliment often, and even buy the hair products! I listen to her as she talks about her recent divorce, her fight with the manicurist, and her trip to NY for consultations. As you can see, a good hair designer relationship has to be one built on trust. Since Harry arrived my hair has taken a back seat and the time had come for me to leave the baby for 3 hour to better my hair. I call to schedule the appointment and to my dismay they very shortly and inconsiderately tell me she does not work there any more! NOT WORK THERE....where I ask and their reply is "can we schedule you with another designer"????? I hang up in a hairy panic and call my hair obsessed friends and mom as to what to do. I then remember I have a very nice size gift card to a very upscale salon in town. I receive these for my birthday and Christmas from Chad for massages. I decide to save the haircents and use the gift cards for this salon with a color specialist! Today was the day, I left the baby with the hubby and spent 3 hours on myself. I was surprised to hear when I sat down that my hair color is not only unnatural but, cut uneven and yellow! Unlike some I loved that she was so honest until I went to the counter to pay! I admit I have spent too much on hair in the past, the salon I was at was pretty pricey and Chad has sympathized by putting my hair in the budget but, when I checked out to pay at this salon I looked around the room for hiddenc cameras! They charged me 3 times what the their brochure said, I missed the up part beside the dollar amount for a highlight. I knew it was going to be more than my former salon(which was not cheap)but, not 3 times as much. I usually walk out of the salon every 6 weeks feeling good but, I walked out of this one feeling like an idiot! I could buy a new car for the amount she charges for every highlight! I cried all the way home, most of the time we cry because our hair looks bad, not me, even though it is much darker than I had planned and looks a bit too "mom" for me, I walked out feeling scammed. I drove out of the upscale parking lot with my upscale hair and an upscale temper! Chad has been surprisingly supportive, he compared it to getting 2 traffic tickets in a row! You know you should have followed the signs(I should have done more research) but, you get caught up in the moment. I am now back to where I started 5 years ago, an empty wallet and without a designer!

Very interesting story. Best part is the disclaimer (much needed). So now stylists are called "designers"?
I liked the job title "beauty operator" best. Now let's come up with some classy phrase for
"TEEA-cher"?
Oh, and where's the pic?
Show me the money.
oh my gosh! i SOOOO HAVE to see a pic of this upscale do! i understand about beauticians...i am VERY picky and ALWAYS afraid of trying new ones out when we move! i too have a tendency of leaving a salon with my wallet 10 times lighter and a lump in my throat...
At this salon they are designers if they specialize in a particular hair design..such as highlighting.
S: You have always had great hair, you are getting your $$ worth!
I hate that feeling of going to the counter to pay and it ends up it was way more expensive then you thought! It makes me want to throw up. I use to go every 6 weeks but now I try to hold out as long as possible to get my hair done b/c it is so darn pricey. Everytime we go back to Searcy for Homecoming or Spring Sing I always get my hair done. I haven't quite found someone like my gal there.
Amanda, me too....Shelly was my favorite at Holden and Company! She did not charge much and was great! I have always felt like I am cheating my my girl! Huh...who did you go to??
Well I think your still gorgeous! You could think of it as going a bit darker for the winter and then brighten it back "yellow" for the summer!? What nerve that girl has! Your suppose to leave feeling pretty and she just did you wrong in every way! It does make me laugh that you said it's "mommish!" ha! You are so fabulous they should be charging you for using their salon!
What does Harry think?
I'm so glad Chad was so understanding! He is such a sweet hubby!
Amanda - when I first found your blog I couldn't get over how gorgeous you looked with blonde hair - I never would have pictured you blonde, but you totally pull it off and make it look natural!
As for the current cut - I think it's cute! Now you know that it's healthy (since it's been freshly cut) and the bangs look good too! You crack me up about having a "trusting relationship" with your beautician - I can relate and I definitely agree!
Well, I thought you and Harry both looked very beautiful in the pictures!!!
Amanda, I think you look great. And I completely understand. When my guy moved to Dallas last year, I freaked. Now, I have a stylist I love in Fayetteville if that isn't too far for you. Her prices are pretty normal (no holden & co prices though...man did I love that place)and she has a cute baby boy too. So ya'll would have plenty to talk about.
And...what are ya'll up to this Saturday? If you aren't busy, I'd love to come visit!
I love you Amanda! This post just captures your spirit! I told you when I was with you that it was my favorite of your hairdos, but I still like this one! You look beautiful! Maybe you can track your old girl down!
I must admit, I really like your hair. I like the darker shades and I like the bangs. The cut in the back looks good, too. I'm liking it but I think you hair always looks good. I personally like it a bit longer and I agreee with Kimberly, you can put some "sun in" this spring. Still, I like it.
I absolutely love the hair color and cut. It is absurd how much we will spend tough. Hope all is well and I love keeping up with you and your sweet boys! Miss you!
Thank you for all the high hair spirited comments! I am still bummed about spending $250 on a highlight without a cut! She only cut my bangs!
$250?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Holy crap Amanda - no wonder you were freakin' out on the drive home...I didn't even know that a stylists could charge that much for a highlight!
Oh my gosh, I can't believe it was that much without a cut! Ok, I promise my girl in F'ville is waaay cheaper than that.
I wish I could cut straight...I might consider cosmetology school!
Amanda, I love the story. But if those are pics of your new do, then I don't think you have much to worry about!!! I love the layers! And it's anything but mom....very young! I LOVE IT!!!
