Thumb Sucker
Harry all the sudden started sucking his thumb today! It is so odd, he woke up from a nap and has been suck his thumb or hand ever since. Is that normal? It seems like all of my questions these days are normality questions. Is it normal for a baby to start sucking their thumb at 7 weeks and if so should I try to stop him? We tried to get a picture but it just didn't work out.

I've heard that if an infant begins suckling on his fist/fingers/thumb AFTER 7 weeks,it is because he is not getting enough attention. I don't know if that's true, but it's pretty scary. (ps send grandmother an announcment)
I did send grandomther an announcement.
harry--- not get enough attention?!?!?!?!?!?! maybe he just needs some auntie em in his lifeeee!!
by the way... kojies rock d-team bball!!!!
So you won't worry anymore...Harry is not normal.
He is way better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Adam's ortho professors told him their theory on thumb sucking as soon as Adalie came out of the womb (just another example of how everyone gives their opinion whether your asking or not)-you can get rid of a paci but you can't get rid of a thumb. However all the books say its fine until their permanent teeth come in so I wouldn't worry. Plus I would think it would work better than a pacifier because he can always find it. If he finds comfort in it why fight it? Although I was proud of giving him those pacis. :)
Adalie's hands are always in her mouth but takes a paci at bedtime so I don't know which one she is!?
Amanda, I wish I knew what to tell you. You are such a good mom for asking all these questions. I will definitely know who to call whenever we have kids.
And after I switched jobs last year, I lost all my email addresses. Could you send yours to me in a comment, and I just won't publish it?
I think it's really cute, even though it may be a little harder to break! I don't know what "they" say about stopping something that Harry's wanting to do, though. If it's soothing him, I'd let him do it!
Oh, and I forgot to say that sometimes james would suck his thumb and then stop, so this might be a passing phase.
I think it was a day thing, he decided not to suck his thumb today. Thanks though!
Thought of this post tonight as Adalie decided it was fun to suck on her big toe! Now that is a problem! Can't wait till she's 2 and sucking on her toe still! Just tease'n!
Kim! U R Way 2 dadgum funny! Loved the toe suck comment! That was hysterical! I really did laugh out loud! Also, your previous comments were pretty good, too.
(wish i'd said 'em)
Laugh out loud funny - not only the post itself but the comments as well!! I personally think thumb sucking is adorable (Rauly has done it since she came home from the hospital and I can't bring myself to make her stop.) Oh and about Kim's previous comment about how everyone gives their opinion whether you ask for it or not - SO TRUE! I have had 3 people over the past few months tell me that I need to make Rauly stop thumb sucking...very few things really tick me off - but these comments did. Whose child is she anyways?!...and these weren't friends or family members - it was total strangers in the grocery store or the mall who said that...grrr... I say - suck away - most kids need braces anyways whether they suck their thumb or not! :) (sorry about the tangent I went off on!)
